The SABC has not exhausted all the available alternatives to justify retrenchments. They should also consider the following:

  • Place a moratorium on bonuses for executives until the financial situation is healthy
  • Dispose or lease non-core assets like flats
  • Rent out studios in all provinces to generate revenue
  • Standardize rates/salaries for all TV and radio presenters/anchors
  • Recover the money that is recoverable from all those involved in fruitless, wasteful and irregular expenditure amounting to billions of rands
  • Conduct a skills audit to determine job suitability and remuneration
  • Deal with the high vacancy rate to save on acting allowances – and hire internally
  • Drastically reduce the turnaround time on the resolution of disciplinary cases of suspended employees (employees are suspended with pay for extended periods)
  • Reskill employees for digital migration to avoid recruiting skilled people externally at a higher rate
  • The public mandate should be holistically funded by the government
  • Consider voluntary and early retirement as an option for employees
