A manager at the SABC in Mpumalanga is under investigation after allegedly appointing a cleaning company that his wife worked for.
Quinton Lenyai is accused of appointing Nozihle Cleaning Services, a company that his wife, Memory, worked for as a general manager since 2013, according to sources. The cleaning company in Mbombela is owned by Dolly Mbuyane.
A source told Sowetan that the issue of Memory’s employment by the cleaning company at the public broadcaster’s offices was no secret and that many people were not happy with it.
Another source confirmed Memory’s employment and said Lenyai was being investigated for that. The source further said when Lenyai joined the SABC, another company was cleaning the offices but its contract was stopped and Nozihle Cleaning Services took over.
“Everyone is aware of Quinton’s wife’s employment by Nozihle. People talked about it in the corridors but are now used to the idea,” a source told Sowetan.
But Memory apparently left Nozihle at the end of August.
When Sowetan confronted Lenyai with the allegations, he referred all queries to SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago. Asked if he wanted a chance to defend himself, Lenyai said “there was nothing to defend”.
Kganyago confirmed that the SABC was investigating the matter but could not give more details because investigations were continuing.
Nozihle owner Mbuyane confirmed that Memory worked for her company but left for greener pastures at the end of August.
She said her 14-year-old company was registered on the SABC database long before she was introduced to Memory.
“I met her through a woman who owns an employment agency. When I met her, she was unemployed and had just moved to this side. I found out that she was experienced in facility management and employed her,” Mbuyane said.
“I would say it was just a coincidence that we got a contract with the SABC where her husband is employed.”
A third source pointed out that before Memory came into the picture, the company employed a man who was allegedly promised the job of a general manager.
The source said the man did not get the job as promised and was retrenched a few months later
